Lonestarvolleyball.com has released its 2007 club season preview:

Team
State Ranking
Lonestarvolleyball Comments
18 Asics
1

Not a big team by 18 Open standards, but deep with athletic ability. As 17s they had the best finish of this age group at last year's national championships. The biggest addition is Amarillo star libero Brittany Bullard, who should add a lot to the team's ball control. It's a large roster, but the numbers will be needed with current injuries to Jordan Jesberg (shoulder and knee) and Manasco (Shoulder). The roster also includes a basketball player, Irene Hester, and a softball player, AJ Watlington, who is a super athletic lefty. Explosive outsides Irene Hester, Kat Wilkerson and Kelsey Manasco all return as do middles Ashley Byrd and Lauren Salisbury and setter Mary Elizabeth Hooper. The ball control should be outstanding with Chelsea Saunders, Evoni Darling and Bullard. Because this isn't a big 18 Open team, they'll have to depend on their defense and a quick tempo offense. "If we can get healthy and run the offense we are installing to go along with our great defense, we have an excellent chance of qualifying in open again this year," says coach John Sample. TAV doesn't play the Tour so it will be later in the season before most other Texas teams get a shot at them.

Prediction: Should earn an Open bid

18 Molten
Other Teams to Watch
Nor can we overlook TAV Molten, a talented #2 team that earned a Club bid and finished in our top 10 last year. They will be small for an 18s team, but will have the ball control and defense that should allow them to compete for a Club bid.
17 Asics
1

This is the third year for coach L.J. Sariego and as if he needed any more firepower, powerful Kayla Kirk joins the lineup. Kirk, of course, was one of the top players in Houston before moving to Dallas where she became one of DFW's top players during the 2006 high school season. Talented defensive specialist Dani Alva is gone, but otherwise this is basically the same team that was among the best in the nation and won two of three meetings with Amarillo last season. Every area is solid. Chelsea Ringel, Jordan Raines and Kirk handle the outside. Shannon Hawari, Laurie McNamara and Stephanie Minnerly control the middle while Jordan Kirk is a solid fixture on the right side. Liberos are Sarah Joeckel and Jen Neice, two very solid defenders and on-target passes. Kelsey Mahoney is one of the nation's top junior setters while Kyli Ginn finally give this team a talented back-up setter and good passing. This will be a more athletic team than last season and all the depth on the outside should keep the team fresh for qualifier season and the best-of-five JO format. "Our blocking and defense should be decent, our setting and attacking good, so it's all about serving and passing," says Sariego.

Prediction: Should earn an Open bid

17 Molten
8

When your top team is good enough to spend a part of the season ranked #1 in the nation, your second team is probably going to have plenty of its own talent. That was the case for TAV Molten last year and once again this is a very solid #2 team. Setter Jordan Goings is a sleeper with tremendous potential. The defensive specialists provide Open level defense and the middles are very athletic. The outside will be solid but ball control will be the key.

Prediction: Club bid possible

16 Asics
Ranking in Feb.

Even though we will wait a month to rank this age group, one thing is certain – there are a number of teams capable of competing on the national level.

Meanwhile TAV, which finished fifth, has bulked up its squad and has Arthur Stanfield, who also knows how to win championships, on the bench. Super athletic Sloane Sunstrum leads the attack and they have a prize in new setter Megan Murphy, who stepped in and played big-time as a sophomore for Plano West in 2006. Meanwhile the defense is solid with Julie Olschwanger, Kristen Duckworth and Madison Hanlan

Former TAV Player Lauren Evans sets Barry record with 439 digs

Barry University sophomore defensive player Lauren Evans (Plano, Texas) added 13 digs in the South Regional semi-final to become Barry's all-time single-season dig leader with 439 this season. She surpassed the former leader Anita Garnett who set the record in 1996 with 421 digs.

Former TAV Player Taylor Barnes sets Baylor record with 11 aces

Baylor freshman setter Taylor Barnes (Arlington, Texas) became the first player in school history to record double-digit service aces, as she pelted No. 19 Missouri with 11, but the effort was not enough as the Tigers held on for a 3-1 (30-23, 26-30, 32-30, 30-26) victory in Big 12 Conference volleyball action Wednesday night at the Hearnes Center.

Barnes, who also had nine kills, 43 assists and seven blocks, broke the five-year old mark of nine set by Laura Daniela Lloreda against Texas State Oct. 22, 2001. Barnes also etched her name in the Missouri record book by breaking the Hearnes Center record. As a team, the Bears set a four-game match record with 16 aces, the second-highest total in school history, behind the record of 18.

Fellow freshman middle blocker Anna Breyfogle (Buda, Texas) led the Bears (13-3, 2-2 Big 12) by hitting .467 with 16 kills and nine blocks. Senior outside hitter posted her 10th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 18 digs, while junior libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) matched LeBlanc for the team lead with 18 digs.

Julianna Klein had a match-high 21 kills, while Jessica Vander Kooi had 18 kills and 20 digs. Nicole Wilson added 15 kills and seven blocks, while Na Yang had 12 kills. Tatum Ailes had 16 digs, while Abbie Booth had 14.

Missouri hit .247 for the match, while holding Baylor to .188. The Tigers outdug the Bears, 73-52, but the Bears outblocked the Tigers, 19.5-12, and outaced them, 16-6.

Former TAV Player Named Missouri Valley Freshman-of-the-Week

Wichita State volleyball student-athlete Amanda Moore has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman-of-the-Week for the week of Sept. 18-24.

Moore, an outside hitter from Haslet, Texas, and Texas Advantage Volleyball, helped the Shockers to a 4-0 start in conference play with sweeps over preseason league favorite Northern Iowa and Bradley.
